Fun on the Lake, History & Maine Lobster Rolls

We are finally home!! Well, Suzannah’s home at least. And now Chris’s and Corbin’s too. Suzannah is from a small town in Maine called Monmouth and her folks have a nice home on a lake.  There’s always something to do here.  Swimming, boating, water skiing in the summer and ice skating, ice sailing, and cross-country skiing in the winter.  And the sunrises and sunsets are absolutely beautiful. But before we have fun, we have some work to do.

Since we decided to travel full-time in our travel trailer, we needed a home base.  Maine seemed like a good choice and Suzannah’s folks said they could help with the mail.  We changed all our credit cards and banking information to their address registered the truck and trailer in Maine (for a small fortune), and got new driver’s licenses.  Suzannah’s mom suggested we set up Hinton the Trail as a small business LLC so we took care of that as well.  Now that we were legal, the fun could start.

Matt’s Home!!!

The day after we arrived home, Matthew flew into Portland, Maine for his summer visit.  It was so exciting because Matt hadn’t been to Maine since 2008 and we knew he and Corbin would have a blast.  And they did, spending their time on the lake or out on bikes. We also planned to spend some time with Suzannah’s cousin and family in York, Maine.

We booked a nice RV park called Burnett’s Campground in York, Maine.  York is a small, coastal resort town located on the Gulf of Maine and is only a few hours from our home in Maine. It was a bit more than we usually spend at about $76 per night, but it was a good location within walking distance to the ocean, shopping, and restaurants.  The campground had nice, large grassy lots with full hook-ups.  It was quiet except for the peacocks and lions from York’s Wild Kingdom next door.

Rides & Maine History

York’s Wild Kingdom is an amusement park with a small zoo and rides geared mostly towards younger children.  You can ride all day for $12 per person or get a zoo or a zoo/ride pass.  There are snacks and drinks offered at the park or you can leave to eat and return later. You do have to pay extra for go-karts and mini-golf but there is plenty to do otherwise. Matt and Corbin loved the Scrambler and the fun houses.

Fort McClary State Historic Site was a short drive from our campground.  Located in Kittery Point, Maine, Fort McClary is a former defensive fortification at the mouth of the Piscataqua River.  The fort has stood for over 275 years and is one of Maine’s most important historic forts. It was utilized during 5 wars even if there was little conflict in the area. At a small $3 admission fee, it is an inexpensive way to learn a little about Maine’s history.

Amazing Lobster Rolls!

Down the road from the fort is Ogunquit, Maine.  We went there specifically for the lobster rolls Suzannah’s cousin Dan said were delicious. First, we had to earn them so we parked at Perkin’s Cove and took a nice walk along the ocean.  The path was great for everyone, strollers, runners, and us. Made a couple of stops along the way so Corbin, Matt, and their cousin Jordan could check out the local ocean life. It’s a rocky shore in most areas but fun to climb over and find lots of mussels, clams, and hermit crabs.

By the time we got done with the walk, it was lobster roll time! We headed to Foot Bridge Lobster, a small takeout shack offering fresh lobster rolls and other foods. All the seafood is fresh off the boat, and the lobster rolls are piled high with lobster and around $15 each depending on the market price. Hot, cold, with or without butter or mayo on a grilled brioche hot dog roll! They were rated the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, really for 3 years in a row now! We highly recommend you make a stop here in Ogunquit, Maine!!

Every year in Maine, Suzannah’s family heads out in the boat on the lake for the Fourth of July Fireworks. They are usually provided by one of the local campgrounds and hundreds of boats come from all over the lake to watch. The fireworks were amazing. All the different colors reflecting on the water really added to the show. It was a good way to end a holiday weekend at home in Maine. Next, we are headed to New Hampshire for a quick trip to the White Mountains.
